First Amendment
Last night during Earth Hour I was sitting quietly in the candlelight and thinking; sipping on a glass of wine and writing in my journal. And I got to thinking about the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In case you don’t recall what that is, here you go:
This is where, in the United States anyway, we get our Freedom of Speech. Just because that first battle was won, however, doesn’t mean we’ve accomplished it. There is a constant battle going on in our country for the Freedom of Speech. The McCarthy era was one time when people weren’t allowed to express themselves freely.
When it comes to Freedom of Religion, during WWII, believe it or not, there was a lot of Antisemitism in the United States despite the fact that we were in the war to prevent Hitler from spreading his views and taking over. After WWII it was understood how important this freedom was world wide and the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, among which is included the freedom of religion.
Also included in that sentence is the freedom to peaceably assemble and the freedom to petition the government for redress of grievances. These are freedoms that we don’t even think about anymore, until there’s a rally where someone gets shot. Because of these freedoms we can write our congressmen, make up petitions about causes we believe in, and have meetings without worrying about whether or not they might be disbanded. My little writer’s group I go to once a month could be considered seditious in some countries.
Why am I harping on this now? Because as basic as these freedoms are, we shouldn’t take them for granted. Because of the Freedom of Speech we are all able to interact in the town square known as the blogosphere and say whatever we want. That is our fundamental right. Other people might not like what you say or write and you may not like what they say or write. Still, it is their right and your right to expression and no amount of bullying will ever change that. You may believe in the Tooth Fairy and others may not. But that is your very basic fundamental right, just as it is theirs to not believe in the Tooth Fairy.
I’m just writing this because I believe it needs to be said. Too many times, in my opinion (and isn’t it wonderful I am in a country where I can express my opinion), people forget these fundamental rights and either bully others or allow themselves to be bullied into thinking otherwise.
So, speak and write your mind. You might get flak for it, but that’s okay. You can give flak back. This tension between dissenters is part of the basis for our basic rights. If we were in China, you wouldn’t have this right. So remember, it’s okay to disagree and say you disagree. It’s okay to express your opinions unapologetically and stand up for those opinions and for yourself. Don’t let others badger you or bully you or patronize you into thinking that your opinions are either not allowed or not important enough. It’s still your right. Don’t let anyone take that from you. Ever.

Earth Hour March 29, 2008
Bwahahahahahahahahaha!
When the Universe hits you over the head with something, it’s best not to ignore it!
Spent the afternoon, yesterday, in Little Tokyo. A friend of mine and I went down for lunch, had ramen bowls bigger than our heads, shopped for little good luck charms for our phones, Pocky, lucky cats, Daruma dolls, and all that other stuff. I’m generally a Chinatown type girl, but I’m beginning to appreciate the fun of Little Tokyo. I wore the wrong walking shoes but it was a great time nonetheless. It was inspiring to explore downtown LA.
Anyway, I get back to my friend’s house (I call it the House of Bamboo) and we’re recuperating a little and I check my email. I’ve been looking for copy editing, proofreading, and writing gigs. On Monday I had made a huge effort to redo some stuff and advertise, etc. I wanted to see if I had gotten any hits. Well, a week or so ago one of the online zines that I have submitted poems and stories to had an opening for a volunteer proofreader, just a few hours a week. Volunteers aren’t allowed to submit stories, it would be a conflict of interest. But I thought it would be a great opportunity to contribute to the zine since it’s free and I don’t have the money to donate to it. On top of that, I might learn a little bit more about how a zine runs, what they look for, and what they’re trying to accomplish, and maybe it would help me hone my skill set. You know. All that.
Well, that zine has rejected EVERYTHING I’ve ever sent to it, including a poem that entered the magical realm of maybe for a while before tumbling to the ultimate no. And it’s official now, they’ve even rejected my volunteer proofreading services. My friends at the House of Bamboo and I were laughing about it. Obviously I am not meant to work with this particular online zine. I should probably take them off the spread sheet (where I track submissions, etc) and not waste any more effort on it.
I am also volunteering with another free zine that seems to want me around and this morning I woke up to a phone call from a colleague who needs help on a technical writing gig. Plus, I’ve been getting all these other cool writing experiences. So, it’s not like the Universe is telling me to stop writing. Just stop trying to hit my head against this particular brick wall, which is fine, cuz they’re givin’ me a headache!
Okay, off to work.
Remember, next week is April and April is POETRY MONTH!
Happy Easter! Happy Purim! Happy Spring! Happy Ostara!
Hope everyone is doing well! Spring has sprung and the earth has made another revolution. In older societies it was spring that was considered the beginning of the new year and not the heart of winter. (Look up April Fool’s Day.) So, I’m kind of thinking of this as a new year’s kind of blog.
A little over a year ago I lost a really good friend who saw me through a lot before he died. I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it through back then, but somehow between the six-month marker and now it started getting easier. Life goes on. Pye and I have gotten closer since then.
In the last year I’ve totally changed my life (for the better I believe, though the jury may still be out on that one), my sister has totally changed her life (again for the better) and my mom has had a real change in her life (also for the better). Dad has had dramatic changes in his life as well. This last rotation has been huge in our little dysfunctional family.
This last month I ended up taking several classes that I think will enrich my life in several ways: How to be a Scriptreader, Writing for Magazines, and How to Write Grant Proposals. The instructors were knowledgeable, seasoned, down-to-earth professionals. Some things I heard I already knew but needed to be reminded of while other things I learned were completely new, and it all helped to bolster the flagging fires of being a professional writer.
I’ve also had the opportunity, in the past year, to delve more into technical writing through working with a colleague/friend of mine. On top of that (cream and cherry on the top of the sundae, so to speak), I had the fantastic break of proofreading and copy editing for a world-class New York Times best-selling author.
(Ask yourself this: How long has it been since you read a real novel? One with rich background and characterization? One that has language that makes your internal ear ring with joy? Compound sentences and complex characters, none of which can be boiled down to two words? One that isn’t just all sex and action? THAT is real writing. Forget about all that marketing crap. Work on REAL writing.)
Most of what I learned is this: It doesn’t matter. It’s very simple and something I knew had to be reminded of: Sit your ass in the chair and write. Do your job. The rest is all crap. If you have the writing sickness that’s all that matters. All the drama and bullying and rule playing (“You’ll never work in this town again!”) and all the “networking” (blogs and conventions and societies and groups) doesn’t mean a pile o’ crap. Just write. Those hour-long conversations on the placement of a comma or whether or not “said” should be used vs. other dialog or action tags? Those loooooong discussions on first person vs. third person or on different POVs and “head popping”? Those arguments aren’t worth anything really. What matters is getting the story down – and getting it down the way YOU want it to be told.
For different people I think this means different approaches. For me it means ignoring those who believe in stark realism in fiction writing. That isn’t me and I shouldn’t even try to have a conversation with writers or editors who believe in that style of writing because we won’t agree — ever. I’ll think they’re being obtuse, dense, dunderheads and they’ll think I’m being stubbornly short-sighted. It also means I should stay the hell away from romance writers because I hate the concept of the “alpha male” or the “strong but vulnerable” female protagonist. That’s not me either and it never will be. If I try to work with a romance writer or please a romance editor we will constantly be frustrated trying to work together.
Writers like Edgar Allen Poe and Walt Whitman were self-published. Did you know that?
Yes, if you want to make a living at this, you need to submit articles and queries and stories and such to different places. Yes, you need to have lots of different eggs in lots of different baskets to keep it all rolling. Yes, you need to be persistent. No, it will not happen next week. But it will happen eventually.
I’ve updated my webpage and the assorted different websites where I have planted my resume and writing to reflect some of this new knowledge. I have decided to spend less time blogging and “networking” and more time writing and looking for writing work.
Frighteningly, I have no writing work looking into the next few weeks ahead, but I’m hopeful it will come if I put in the work; do the writing and reading and the researching each day. This will be the first year ever I’ve had to deal with quarterly taxes and I’m glad I have a sister who knows about these things. But again, I’m hopeful looking ahead. The past year has brought a lot of good learning experiences and opportunities and I think the next will bring even more.
I Hate TV!
Who are these executives kidding! It’s all crap! Reality shows, tabloid news, sports, UGH! And if it’s not that it’s “beautiful women” and “alpha men” of varying ages falling in and out of intrigue and bed with each other. If it’s the CW (ie WB) then they’re all in high school or college. If it’s another network then at least they’re parading around as adults, even if they don’t act like it. And I’ve already seen every CSI and L&O rerun. Even the public station is letting me down and showing crap.
I want Redwall, I want Wind in the Willows, I want Narnia, I want Buffy, I want Xena, I want Neverwhere, I want Good Omens, I want Star Trek, I want Andromeda, I want Stargate, I want Firefly, I want I don’t know, cool shows. That’s what I want.
I wish I could pay for cable and only pay for those stations I would actually watch. That’s why I have Netflix, so I won’t have to put up with the stupid crap that gatekeeper Hollywood producers have decided I have to watch. After all, my demographic – geeky, single, middle-aged, white female — doesn’t count.
Inspiration
Friend of mine on Live Journal, Rhona, had a blog about inspirational quotes. I have a few I have up all the time, but I’ve been trying to pay more attention to what I can find ever since I read her blog. So, I thought I would just take some time to put some down here. If you have any yourself feel free to offer them up. We all need a little inspiration from time to time.
“How do we not know but that our unreason may be better than another’s truth?” Keats
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle.
“Whatever you do is insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.” Mahatma Gandhi
“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.” Albert Einstein
“You must keep sending your work out; you must never let a manuscript do nothing but eat its head off in a drawer. You send that work out again and again, while you’re working on another one. If you have talent, you will receive some measure of success — but only if you persist.” Isaac Asimov
“Better a good book than a mediocre man.” (Don’t know who)
There are some others I’ve written down over the years, but I can’t find them now. I’ll add them later.
So, any favorite quotes out there that keep you going?
I’m Wiped!
I took a couple of writing type classes today and I’m wiped. It felt good to take these classes and they were taught by someone who has been involved in many different aspects of writing and is a seasoned writer. He was so very refreshing and added a heavy dose of realism to the classes, as well as giving us all practical things to do to attain our goals, and encouraging us as well. I think I’m going to keep him in mind to take more classes from in the future. For now, I’m just wiped out. My brain feels like it’s been given a real workout. I was going to come home and do some work, but I think I might just go to bed early.
But it was nice. It felt good to be challenged liked that. And to have some things I already knew be affirmed.
And the store down the street finally had BUTTER! Don’t laugh! They’ve been out of butter ALL WEEK LONG! Sacrilege!
Women’s History Month….
Good (ugh) morning! I hate Daylight Savings Time. I do not function as well during DST as I do during Standard Time. People go ON about extra daylight, but the truth is it’s the same amount of daylight, they’re just f*ckin’ with your circadian rhythms to get you up earlier so you actually pay attention to it. And it’s over-rated.
This morning (ugh), I do not get an extra day to get used to this screwing up of my internal clock because I have to be at a class at 9 AM. So, NPR woke me up at o’dark thirty this morning with the recounting of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire as a reminder that March is Women’s History Month. I’m usually quicker at acknowledging this. I must be busy and pre-occupied.
For some reason, these days, feminists get the short shrift from people who think that we (Yes, I’m including myself as a feminist) are too extreme. But the fact that it’s the 21st century and the US still hasn’t had a woman president, when other countries all over the world have, should speak for itself. Hey, I started kindergarten in 1969. Women, little girls, were not allowed to wear pants to school until 1970-71, even then they had to wear skirts to school assemblies. During the 1980s I had a high school teacher who into trouble from the principle every time she chose to wear pants to work instead of a skirt or dress. But, it’s not just about what one can wear.
Just Google Women’s Suffrage or the 19th Amendment and you’ll find one of the major reasons women still fight for keeping their rights. People, women, died so I can vote. Lots of other women before me have put up all sorts of crap so that I can do things like report an employer if he sexually harasses me or have a means of protecting myself and calling for justice if a husband, lover, stranger, brother, or father beats and/or rapes me. And unless anyone forgets, it took a long time for women to be seen as the 60% population that is on college campuses across the US today – in both undergraduate and post-graduate classes. I’ve worked with women who were told to go into nursing instead of med school because women can’t handle med school. A few years later their co-horts were encouraged to attend med school, but that was because there were women out there who were willing to keep at it, to keep fighting for their rights.
We can’t just rest on our laurels and say, “it’s done.” When we do that, it’s too easy to let things slide back into the old ways. It’s to easy to become “yes, women” and keep the peace rather than to raise our hands and point out that something is wrong. Every generation has to keep up the fight.
And now, I’ve gotta go to that class, keep up my own version of a fight. Below is the Non Sequitur for today:

Today’s Comic
On my Yahoo! Page I have it set up so I get some of my favorite comics, Non Sequitur being one of my favorites. Today’s comic seemed pretty apt to put up on a blog. Made me chuckle.
